How To Take Care Of Glasses

Need advice on how to take care of glasses? Regular maintenance and proper cleaning technique is important to prevent scratched and dirty eyeglasses. In this post, I’ve listed my best eyeglasses tips and tricks on how to care and clean glasses.

Prescription glasses are expensive, so it’s important to take good care of them so they can last for years to come! Whether you have rimless, metal, or plastic frames, all these tips apply!

Best Products To Take Care of Glasses

1. Store Your Glasses In A Hard Shell Case When Not In Use

Prescription glasses are fragile AND expensive. The last thing you want to do is place them down randomly and accidentally sit on your glasses (unfortunately, this is something I have done!). To take care of your glasses, always store them in a safe place, away from any potential mishaps.

I highly recommend every glasses wearer to own a hard shell glasses case. Hard shell glasses cases are inexpensive (some newly bought glasses even come with a free one!) and a huge must have if you travel with glasses. Compared to other types of glasses cases, they are sturdier and will protect your glasses from most damage.

To make your glasses last longer, always store your glasses in a hard shell glasses case when they are not in use. Never throw them into a bag or purse without placing them in a sturdy case first. If you don’t, this can cause your glasses to shuffle around your bag, leading to lens scratches and frame damage.

Get a hard shell glasses case! It’s worth it! You can get decent hard shell glasses case for under $10 (like this glasses case from Amazon).

2. Never Lay Your Glasses Lens Side Down

What is one basic must know tip on how to take care of glasses? Never lay your glasses lens side down! Laying your eyeglasses on the lens side will led to scratches and lens damage from touching your surfaces.

If you spent extra cash on blue light and/or anti glare lens, don’t damage your expensive glasses lens by placing your glasses down on the wrong side. To help your glasses last longer, always place them down lens side up!

You should always be gentle with your glasses. Always be cautious where you place your glasses. Never haphazardly toss your glasses onto your nightstand. This is an important eyeglasses care tip to prevent expensive lens scratches and damage.

3. Always Use Microfiber Cloths To Wipe Glasses Lens

Although it may be convenient to grab the nearest paper towel, tissue, or jacket sleeve to wipe down foggy lens, don’t do it! These types of materials will scratch your lens! Besides permanent damage, these materials will not effectively clean your lens and lead to smearing.

To properly take care of glasses, always use microfiber cloths to wipe down dirty prescription glasses lens. You can use any type of microfiber cloths, such as microfiber cleaning cloths. Microfiber cloths can easily clear up any foggy glasses without scratching the lens. This is an important tip on how to properly clean your glasses.

I highly recommend every glasses wearer to own a set of microfiber glasses cloths (like these glasses cleaning cloths from Amazon) to clean glasses on the go. Microfiber glasses cloths are inexpensive and the most effective way to safely wipe glasses lens. They are also compact and can be stored easily in a bag.

The cloths are compact and the perfect size to store in a daily bag or purse. They are reusable and washable, so you can use them for years to come.

To make your glasses last longer, switch to a microfiber cleaning cloth! Not only are they safer to use, but they clean your glasses way better than other materials!

4. Tighten Loose Screws With A Glasses Screwdriver

Overtime, daily eyeglasses use can led to loose screws and a wobbly frame. One tip on how to take care of glasses when this happens is to use a glasses screwdriver or repair tool kit to tighten or replace loose or lost screws.

I highly recommend tightening loose screws as soon as you notice them. This will help prevent you from accidentally losing screws and important pieces from your glasses when they fall out.

Proper care and maintenance is important to make glasses last longer. I recommend having a glasses repair tool kit on hand incase you need to emergency repair your glasses. You can find a budget glasses repair tool kit for around $10 (like the one below).

5. NEVER Use Hot Water To Clean Glasses

Looking for eyeglasses tips on how to properly clean your glasses? As a rule of thumb, NEVER use hot water to clean glasses! Hot water can cause permanent damage to the coating of your lens. If you have a blue light or anti glare coating on your lens, hot water will cause them to come off.

If you want to clean prescription glasses with water, I recommend using cold or room temperature water (you could also use lukewarm water). Remember, to make your glasses last longer and to take care of glasses, NEVER use hot water!

6. Use Dish Soap To Clean Off Dirty Glasses

My favorite tip on how to take care of glasses is to clean them with dish soap! The only cleaning tools you truly need is dish soap and a microfiber cloth. You don’t need expensive glasses cleaners to take care of your eyeglasses!

How To Properly Clean Your Glasses With Dish Soap:

  1. Dab a small amount of dish soap onto your index finger.
  2. In a circular motion, gently rub your dish soap onto your glasses lens front and back.
  3. Run cold water over the lens to wash away the dish soap and any dirt.
  4. Use a microfiber cloth to dry and wipe off lens.
  5. Done!

Although simple, this is a highly effective, affordable method to quickly achieve crystal clear glasses at home. To help glasses last longer, clean dirty glasses regularly. Use this same method to clean off dirty frames and nose pads.

7. To Clean Dirty Nose Pads, Unscrew Them Before Cleaning

One of the hardest parts of cleaning prescription glasses is cleaning the nose pads. To make your glasses last longer, you’ll need to properly clean up any dirt build up. Overtime, oils, moisture, and dirt build up on the nose pads, causing a growth of that “green stuff” around them. This green stuff is caused by oxidation: the copper material of our glasses reacting to our oils leading to a build up of green stuff.

Although disgusting looking, this is something that commonly happens with most eyeglasses. This is also something that may seem impossible to clean at first. In order to get in between the crevices, I recommend unscrewing the nose pads with a glasses screwdriver to proper cleaning them.

This is my best nose pad cleaning tip on how to take care of glasses. I personally have tried other methods such as cleaning the pads with a q-tip or cotton pad. Although better than nothing, they aren’t capable of cleaning the underside of the nose pads where the green stuff seems most prevalent.

After taking apart the nose pads, clean them off with dish soap and cold water. Wipe them down with a microfiber cloth and your nose pads should be clean like new!
